Best Director is awarded to the individual or individuals for their excellence in directing a motion picture. George Miller was the award's first recipient for his work on Mad Max: Fury Road. Ryan Coogler was the first Black man to be nominated for the award, the first person to receive a second nomination and, to date, is the youngest nominee in the history of the award. Greta Gerwig was the first woman to be nominated for the award and the first woman to receive a second nomination. Emerald Fennell was the first woman to receive the award for her work on Promising Young Woman, being a member of a historic class that saw three women nominated, two of which were the first women of color to be nominated in the award's history. Bong Joon Ho was the first Asian to win Best Director. Pete Docter is the only individual to be nominated for directing an animated film. Four duos have been nominated for the award: the Coen Brothers, the Russo Brothers, the Safdie Brothers and the Daniels.
